DEPARTMNT is a culture-focused NFC technology company building the infrastructure that connects brands, experiences, and communities. Through products like TapTech, CNX, and DEPT CORE, they create physical and digital touchpoints that help brands engage audiences while capturing meaningful data. Their clients range from emerging labels to global brands looking to deepen consumer relationships through events, retail, and cultural activations.
My work at DEPARTMNT spanned a wide range of initiatives, from investor pitch decks and market research to social media strategy, brand positioning, and web design. This cross-functional role gave me exposure to both the creative and business sides of building a technology company.
One of the most valuable aspects of the internship was the level of access I had to the company's leadership. Through weekly meetings with the CEO, I gained firsthand insight into fundraising, business strategy, client relationships, and the realities of scaling a venture-backed startup. I was also invited to investor meetings and strategic discussions, which are opportunities that are uncommon for an intern. The experience fundamentally shaped how I think about business, and lessons I learned have directly influenced how I run Gray Studios and approach client work today.
This opportunity gave me firsthand experience in how startups are built, funded, and scaled. I developed an understanding of how to build brand systems and strategic assets that align with a company's stage, goals, and audience. Operating in a fast-moving startup environment taught me how to work efficiently and deliver high-quality work under tight timelines. I apply those lessons directly to Gray Studios, helping founders and brands turn complex ideas into clear, compelling narratives.
